The Faith of Nothing

I got the feeling the week of the election that something pretty major was at stake. I know, that is an obvious statement but it wasn’t just who won the election but something else. When you look at the world as a whole there are not many places left where you can freely worship the one true God. We are one of the few countries left where Christianity is still a prominent religion. It isn’t as prominent as it should be but there is still a thread left on the rope that holds us to the principles of the Bible.

While I stood in the two hour long line and exercised my right to vote there was an overwhelming sense of the battle that is going on in this country. The last little bit of what ties us to what this country was founded on is trying to be squeezed out. This feeling caused me to think about a statement made by President Obama:

“Whatever we once were, we are no longer a Christian nation – at least not just, we are also a Jewish nation, a Muslim nation and a Buddhist nation and a Hindu nation and a nation of non-believers.”

He was right when making this statement however, I would disagree with one part of it. ‘A nation of non-believers’. Regardless if the belief is in THE God or that once death comes there is nothing after, you believe in something. You have a faith in something. Most of what this world believes is based on the kind of glasses barryyou put on. If you haven’t ever watched the Goldberg’s on ABC, I would recommend you do. This is a perfect example of what type of glasses you are going to put on. In the show, Beverly, the overbearing ‘smother’ wakes up each morning and puts on her ‘Mom Goggles’. These goggles cause her to view her oldest son’s karate and rapping skills a little differently then what the rest of the world sees. Whether you want to admit it or not each of us wakes up and puts on some goggles just like Beverly. We all stand with a foundation that has been slowly built beneath us since birth by our parents, friends, people that pass through our lives, and even people and events that we have not experienced but read a news story on or watched on TV. This foundation is what shades your goggles one color or another.

When you look at the USA today there are so many different colored goggles being put on each and every morning. The people that wake up each morning with a firm belief in the God of the Bible put on goggles that are shaded with this belief. They may go out into the world trying to show people the love that the God has to offer as they know, based on their foundation, they will live eternally with God through faith in Jesus (Ephesians 2:8-9). The people that believe in Buddha put their goggles on and go out into the world knowing, based on their foundation, that they will be reborn into something else in the next life. The people that believe in Islam put on their goggles and go out into the world knowing, based on their foundation, that the good and bad they do determines where they go when they die. The Agnostic puts on their goggles and goes out into the world, based on the foundation they have laid, and knows that nothing can be proven past what we see and personally experience. You can see this list can go on and on as the list of religions in this world is long. But can you be a ‘non-believer’?

Let’s look at what the word ‘faith’ means.

  • Google defines faith as ‘complete trust or confidence in someone or something or a strongly held belief or theory’.
  • Hebrews 11:1 defines faith as the ‘confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.’

So the question I ask is can you have no faith? We see that the definition of faith is the confidence in something we do not see or belief of a theory.

Let’s look at the wind or air. Can you see wind and air? No, you can see the effects of what the wind can do by the leaves it brushes up into the air, the grass it make waves in the fields, or the perfect hair day you started with that was ruined as soon as you stepped outside. wind

You know that wind exists because of these effects of it. You know that air exists because you are alive from breathing it. But it isn’t visible to your naked eye.

Whether you say that there is no higher being and we go nowhere after death or if you say there is an afterlife, have you died and either stopped existing or went to the afterlife? So no matter what you say if you believe or not you believe in something. You have faith in something. It all depends on what goggles you are putting on.

Let’s look at the foundations of somebody that believes that the God is real and all powerful. What is their foundation built on that causes them to put these color of goggles on each morning? Well I think you know what I’m going to say… God’s written word. That is what their faith is founded in. When they look at the world they can see the evidence of God due to the faith they have in His written word.

Romans 1:20 tells us ‘For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities–his eternal power and divine nature–have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.’ When you put on your Goggles and stand on the foundation of the Bible as truth, we see that creation itself screams of the power and divine nature that is God. We will stand without excuse as it’s not just God’s word that tells of the glory of God but it is what He created as well that points us to Him. Read Psalm 19:1-6 below:

1The heavens declare the glory of God;
the sky displays his handiwork.
Day after day it speaks out;
night after night it reveals his greatness.
There is no actual speech or word,
nor is its voice literally heard.
Yet its voice echoes throughout the earth;
its words carry to the distant horizon.
In the sky he has pitched a tent for the sun.
Like a bridegroom it emerges from its chamber;
like a strong man it enjoys running its course.
It emerges from the distant horizon,
and goes from one end of the sky to the other;
nothing can escape its heat.

So the one that has faith in the Word can look at creation and see the evidence of what the Bible says in Genesis 7-8, that the world suffered judgement via a worldwide flood. They can see the evidence in the marine fossils found in the Grand Canyon or the fossilized shellfish found in the Himalayas. They look at the picture of the fossil of a fish in the middle of dinner and say this was caused by a quick burial and preservation.

They look at the fossils and see this as evidence of the global flood from Noah’s day. They see it clearly so how can other’s not see the clear evidence displayed in not only the fossils but the perfect creation of every living animal. Let’s look at the Giraffe as well. I think everybody knows what happens when we ourselves hang upside down for too long… our blood rushes to our head and it just isn’t pretty (at least for me it isn’t, I’m sure there is somebody out there that looks absolutely marvelous with a bloated red face). So what would happen if a Giraffe does? Well who would do that to a Giraffe and why?! Well they somewhat do it to themselves. Think about the length of their necks. When they bend down to take a drink of water that is essential what is happening as their heads go below their body in order to get a drink of water. giraffeNot only do they have much further to go to drink water but when they are standing they have to get blood to their brain so they have an extremely powerful heart to pump it up their long necks so what do you think would happen if this extremely strong heart pumps blood to their head as they are drinking? Well yet again, the one that has faith in the Bible can clearly see God’s handiwork. Below is a snipit from the Answers in Genesis article ‘Do Drinking Giraffes Have Headaches?’ The article can be read here in its entirety.

Second, the giraffe has in his jugular veins a series of one-way check valves which immediately close as the head is lowered, thus preventing blood from flowing back down into the brain.

But what of the blood flow through the carotid artery from the heart to the brain?

A third design feature is the ‘wonder net’, a spongy tissue filled with numerous small blood vessels located near the base of the brain. The arterial blood first flows through this net of vessels before it reaches the brain. It is believed that when the animal stoops to drink, the wonder net in some way controls the blood flow so that the full pressure is not exerted on the brain.

Scientists also believe that probably the cerebrospinal fluid which bathes the brain and spinal column produces a counter-pressure which prevents rupture or leakage from the brain capillaries. The effect is similar to that of a G-suit worn by fighter pilots and astronauts. The G-suit exerts pressure on the body and legs of the wearer under high acceleration and prevents blackout. Leakage from the capillaries in the giraffe’s legs, due to high blood pressure, is also probably prevented by a similar pressure of the tissue fluid outside the cells. In addition, the walls of the giraffe’s arteries are thicker than those in any other mammal.

This foundations causes the Christian to look at the world and know for certain that God is alive. He is real and almighty. They can’t see Him with their own eyes but they see the evidence of His existence. They look at the evidence and ask, ‘How can this be an accident? How can this be a result of evolution?’ They have the faith that heaven and hell are real. They live their lives and view the world based on this foundation.

So now let’s look at the other side. What foundation does the person that believes there is no God stand on? There are many answers for this however, let’s look at one. Science. Which there is a good article here that will help to define ‘science’. What they are taught is that science is true and the Bible is a book of fairy tales. This is what upholds the foundation they stand on. Science is fact and that is what colors their goggles. They look at the fossils and see how they formed slowly over millions of years. But how do they explain the marine fossils in high mountains? Here is a link to an article from the New York Times (click here). The belief is similar to the flood of Noah however, there is a big difference. Instead of it being the work of God, the Andes Mountains just rose quickly bringing the fossils from the ocean floor to the top.

What about the evolution of the giraffe? How did that come together? Based on the article by The Nature Institute (click here) the neck of the giraffe formed over many years from other hoofed animals. They had the need to reach food higher up and so their necks gradually evolved to become longer and longer in order to meet the needs to survive by reaching food higher in the trees. It wasn’t God that made it all work together perfectly but the result of evolution over millions of years.

This foundation causes the ‘non-believer’ to look at the world and know for certain that there is no God or that there is no evidence to support the reality of God. They take the evidence the Christian sees as undeniable proof of the living God and see it as proof that the earth was formed out of slow gradual processes. These people did not actually see these formations happening nor is there evolutionary progressions in the fossil chains. They see the similarities in the different hoofed creatures and believe that they at one time were one animal rather than that they were created in different kinds (see Genesis 1).

The biggest difference between these two believers is where the foundation is started from. The ‘non-believer’ starts from man’s ideas and theories. They start from the belief of there is no God and make the science appear to confirm that belief. Let’s look at the age of the Earth. Many scientist use what is called Carbon 14 dating and say that it proves the Earth to be billions of years old. I am far from a scientist so if you would like to learn more about this please read this article. This article also shows that there is one big assumption made when using this method that is pretty critical to the accuracy of this dating method. The scientist using this to prove the Earth is billions of years old assume that ‘the ratio of 14C to 12C in the atmosphere has always been the same as it is today’. There is a big problem with that.

The earth has a magnetic field around it which helps protect us from harmful radiation from outer space. This magnetic field is decaying (getting weaker). The stronger the field is around the earth, the fewer the number of cosmic rays that are able to reach the atmosphere. This would result in a smaller production of 14C in the atmosphere in earth’s past.

The article also discusses the creator of this dating method as well. They started with the foundation that God was not real and that is what these assumptions were based on and taught as fact. I could go on and on but I’m not trying write a book here 🙂

You can see that the way you view things are based on what your foundation is based on. The ‘non-believer’s’ foundation can be based on what scientist say is truth and their foundation can be based on the belief that there is no God. The ‘believer’s’ foundation is build on the Bible and that foundation is God. Faith is the strongly held belief or confidence in what we do not see. The ‘non-believer’ has to use faith in the assumptions made by scientists as neither of them witnessed the creation of the world. The ‘believer’ has to use faith in the written word of God as He was there and we were not. Both have a strong faith in something as none of us were there at creation however, one faith does base their beliefs off One who was there. Genesis 1:1 tells us:

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

John 1:1-3 also tells us:

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was fully God. The Word was with God in the beginning. All things were created by him, and apart from him not one thing was created that has been created.

He is our eye witness. Romans 3:3-4 tells us:

What then? If some did not believe, does their unbelief nullify the faithfulness of God?Absolutely not! Let God be proven true, and every human being shown up as a liar,

Humans are not perfect. Humans are fallible. God is perfect. God is infallible. The statement from President Obama regarding us also being a nation of ‘non-believers’, what he should have actually stated was we are no longer a nation that holds God’s word as truth but we have become a nation that holds man’s word as truth. We are nation with the faith of self. We have become a nation that says ‘no, God! I’ve got this’. We have become a nation that says I need, I want, I deserve. We are no longer a nation that fights for God but a nation that fights God. What we once were, we certainly are no longer.
